  • Sketch it

It all starts with a sketch. The idea doesn’t have to be perfect, but the first thing to do is get a rough outline of the plan. From there, more details can be added.

  • Build it

The next thing to add is the rough idea of the details that I can then use to create the line art from. Things like clothing, faces, expressions, and items get added at this step.

  • Continue it

The third step is to create the line art. This will be the shell that I use to define the image from this point forward. The lines are final and will contain the coloring.

  • Color it

Using thee previous steps lines as a guide, flat colors are added. These will be the base colors that will hold the shading and details done in the next step.

  • Detail it

Now the detailing of the colors and the lighting around the characters can be added, giving depth to each pose. It is at this point that I make decisions about where the light is coming from.

  • Give it a background

After finalizing the characters, the background gets added, as well as extra lighting around each character to help identify and separate them from each other and the background.

Finish it!

With that, the project is finished. There may be edits made along the way of the project, however for a majority of my illustrations, these are the steps I use. This was made in Autodesk Sketchbook, and took several days of work to accomplish. It serves as a book cover for a fictional series made for an assignment.
